When first venturing into the field of woodworking, it is important to be properly equipped for the task. Improper tools can make projects more frustrating and time consuming. Remember, it is more important to purchase high quality tools than to have a high quantity of tools as you are making your initial purchases.

Before setting off to the local hardware store, consider the types of projects you will be endeavoring upon. There are many tools that look alike but serve very different purposes. For example, the hammer selection of a hardware store can seem ridiculously large if you are not familiar with the different purposes and functions of the different styles. A general purpose hammer should have a 12 to 14 inch handle and a flat head with a claw reverse. Additional options such as wood handles, waffle faces and magnetic nail loaders are options to consider as your skills advance.

Most beginning woodworkers would benefit from a drill and a saw. Electric or manual driven options are available, but the decision should be based on the size of your intended project. A high quality bubble-level, tape measure and carpenter’s angle are also excellent first purchases that will be useful.

Have you ever been halfway through a project and realize that the drill you have is not nearly sufficient enough to complete the job? It is very frustrating to discover that the drill you have always assumed to be okay, simply couldn’t cut it when put to the test. Tools in general are among the items that we often do not think much about until we actually need them, and at that point it is usually very inconvenient to drop the project to go buy them.

With tools as a whole, but especially drills, the best plan of action is to obtain a good one in advance, long before you realize that you need them. Many hobby projects or home improvement projects require a good drill in order to complete it. Without a good drill, you can expect to double or even triple the amount of time that your project will take to complete. Besides speeding up your project, a good drill can improve the quality of the finished project as well. After making sure that you have a great drill on hand before the project, you no longer have to worry about stripped screws and bolts, or non-level drilling.

When you first begin to undertake wood projects, it is important to start with simple designs. Furniture is an appealing first project, but you must remember that your skills will grow with experience. Do not set yourself up for disappointment and frustration by endeavoring on a project that requires advanced jointing or superior craftsmanship.

A small nightstand or end table can be a perfect first project. The difficulty to these designs is typically in making sure the legs are of equal length to prevent wobbling but that is accomplished through careful measuring and cutting. A basic chair can also be a simple first project if it is a basic design.

To build a simple table or nightstand, begin by looking for building blue prints that are uncomplicated to follow and conform to the dimensions of your desired space. Plenty of free plans are available on the internet, but your local hardware store may also have free plans available at customer service. Acquiring plans from a hardware store is an excellent option because it enables you to seek experienced advice when selecting materials and completing construction. They can even offer finishing tips to increase the overall beauty of a simple construction.

Working with wood can be a tremendous hobby. Then again, some will work with would professionally. Either way, working with wood can bring forth many hours of enjoyment. However, such enjoyment can be completely undermined if you do not follow proper safety precautions. Here are a few tips to boost your safety potential when working with wood:

You will definitely want to wear eye protection. Some will outright dismiss the need for wearing safety goggles but such an attitude is a dangerous one. You never want to run the risk of anything getting into your eyes for the obvious reasons – a severe injury could result.

Be sure the woodworking area is in proper condition. You will want a clean and orderly area as opposed to one that is haphazardly designed. When your work area is chaotic, you increase the likelihood you will be injured.

Have all the tools needed to properly perform the tasks you are engaged in. Do not become creative with your selection of tools. Instead, use the right tools in the right manner.

The tools must also be in proper working condition. Never make the egregious error of working with tools that are in poor condition as this will yield a major safety risk.

These tips may seem simple but they are highly valuable for maintaining your safety.
